Tuesday Tunes: “Tyler” by The Toadies

Lyrics:

And she runs through her days with a smile on her face
And she runs, and she waits, and I wait

We can drive to any place, day or night, across the state
And in the morning, into Mexico, we will wake up

I find a window in the kitchen, and I let myself in
Rummage through the refrigerator, find myself a beer
I can’t believe I’m really here, and she’s lying in that bed
I can almost feel her touch, and her anxious breath!

I stumble in the hallway, outside the bedroom door
I hear her call out to me, I hear the fear in her voice
She pulls the covers tighter, I press against the door

I will be with her tonight!

Tuesday Tunes: Bette Midler’s “Stuff Like That There”

This hoppin’ & boppin’ tune is from the incredible movie For the Boys, a powerful movie about life and the effects of war. Bette Midler is basically flawless. ❤

Enjoy!

lyrics:

I was alone on a shelf
in a world by myself.
Oh, where could my Prince Charming be?
But a man came along,
made my life like a song,
and taught me these words of ecstasy,
tenderly.

I want some huggin’ and some squeezin’
and some muggin’ and some teasin’
and some stuff like that there.
I want some pettin’ and some spoonin’
and some happy honeymoonin’
and some stuff like that there.

I used to think that love
was just a lot o’ rubbish;
a mess o’ cabbage, a mess o’ cabbage.
But now my attitude
is wholly lovey dovish,
and baby, you, you’ve done it!

I want some kissin’ and some hopin’
and some missin’ and some mopin’
and some stuff like that there.
I want some leapin’ and some chasin’
and some weepin’ and some pacin’
and some stuff like that there.

And when I get a certain feelin’ I confess it.
There’s really only one expression to express it.
I want some huggin’ and some squeezin’
and some muggin’ and some teasin’
and some leapin’ and some chasin’
and some weepin’ and some pacin’
and some stuff,
I want some stuff like that there.

I used to think romance was bunk,
a double mickey for the ickey.
But all at once my heart was sunk,
and baby, you, you done it!

I want some kissin’ and some hopin’
and some missin’ and some mopin’
and some stuff like that there.
I want some leapin’ and some chasin’
and some weepin’ and some pacin’
and some stuff like that there.

And when I get a certain feelin’ I confess it.
There’s really only one expression to express it.
I want some huggin’, squeezin’,
muggin’, teasin’ and some stuff,
stuff like that there!
Oooooooooh!

Tuesday Tunes: They Might Be Giants’ “Istanbul (Not Constantinople)”

Bunheads. Oh my heart. Your time was cut too short. Here was see Sasha dancing out to They Might be Giants’ “Istanbul (Not Constantinople).”

Emily Nussbaum of The New Yorker wrote “My So-Called Top-Ten List” and included this closing scene of the episode as number 1, writing, “This. Television is always the best when it takes you by surprise.”

And it certainly does. Even though Nussbaum wrote this on 4 December 2012, I was just as surprised when I watched it for the first time before Christmas break. Binge-watching has its ups and downs, but this scene stands out in my memory of such an incredible TV show with only one season, running from 11 June 2012 to 25 February 2013. Perhaps it is surprising because of the song choice. We’ve seen classical or traditional ballet performances in this show. However, here we see a darkness and greater depth to the character torn by the past (an unhappy family life) and the future (with divorced parents and the unknown).

You can watch Bunheads here for free! Do it, especially while it lasts, because who knows when it will be gone again.

Lyrics

Istanbul was Constantinople
Now it’s Istanbul, not Constantinople
Been a long time gone, Constantinople
Now it’s Turkish delight on a moonlit night

Every gal in Constantinople
Lives in Istanbul, not Constantinople
So if you’ve a date in Constantinople
She’ll be waiting in Istanbul

Even old New York was once New Amsterdam
Why they changed it I can’t say
People just liked it better that way

So take me back to Constantinople
No, you can’t go back to Constantinople
Been a long time gone, Constantinople
Why did Constantinople get the works?
That’s nobody’s business but the Turks

Istanbul, Istanbul
Istanbul, Istanbul

Even old New York was once New Amsterdam
Why they changed it I can’t say
People just liked it better that way

Istanbul was Constantinople
Now it’s Istanbul, not Constantinople
Been a long time gone, Constantinople
Why did Constantinople get the works?
That’s nobody’s business but the Turks

So take me back to Constantinople
No, you can’t go back to Constantinople
Been a long time gone, Constantinople
Why did Constantinople get the works?
That’s nobody’s business but the Turks

Tuesday Tunes: “Pop Around the Clock”

No, I’m not doing an advertisement or sponsorship thing for Tide. However, I think this is an interesting cover/re-interpretation of the original, Billy Haley’s “Rock Around the Clock.”

The original was released in a 1950s and, in contrast, the commercial song in 2015. While the lyrics are similar (compare by looking at the two different sections below), there are differences in order to sell the product—repeatedly using the word pop instead of rock. Additionally, the 2015 version is less rock’n’roll and more modern pop (no pun intended). For me, the 1950s version feels more authentic or traditional and the 2015 version seems more upbeat and modern, but I wouldn’t say that one is better than the other; they’re just different. Finally, the 1950s version is an original recording, so the film is black and white, but the 2015 commercial is in full bright (dare I say technicolor?) colors.

Enjoy listening to both songs! Notice any other differences? Feel free to comment bellow!

Tide LYRICS:

One, two, three o’clock, four o’clock, pop
Five, six, seven o’clock, eight o’clock, pop
Nine, ten, eleven o’clock, twelve o’clock, pop
We’re gonna pop around the clock tonight
Put your glad rags on and join me, hon’
We’ll have some fun when the clock strikes one
We’re gonna pop around the clock tonight
We’re gonna pop, pop, pop till the broad daylight
We’re gonna pop around the clock tonight

Billy Haley’s “Rock Around the Clock” LYRICS:

One, two, three o’clock, four o’clock rock
Five, six, seven o’clock, eight o’clock rock
Nine, ten, eleven o’clock, twelve o’clock rock
We’re gonna rock around the clock tonight

Put your glad rags on and join me hon’
We’ll have some fun when the clock strikes one
We’re gonna rock around the clock tonight
We’re gonna rock, rock, rock, ’till broad daylight
We’re gonna rock, gonna rock around the clock tonight

When the clock strikes two, three and four
If the band slows down we’ll yell for more
We’re gonna rock around the clock tonight
We’re gonna rock, rock, rock, ’till broad daylight
We’re gonna rock, gonna rock around the clock tonight

When the chimes ring five, six, and seven
We’ll be right in seventh heaven
We’re gonna rock around the clock tonight
We’re gonna rock, rock, rock, ’till broad daylight
We’re gonna rock, gonna rock around the clock tonight

When it’s eight, nine, ten, eleven too
I’ll be goin’ strong and so will you
We’re gonna rock around the clock tonight
We’re gonna rock, rock, rock, ’till broad daylight
We’re gonna rock, gonna rock around the clock tonight

When the clock strikes twelve we’ll cool off then
Start rockin’ ’round the clock again
We’re gonna rock around the clock tonight
We’re gonna rock, rock, rock, ’till broad daylight
We’re gonna rock, gonna rock around the clock tonight

Tuesday Tunes: Amanda Palmer’s cover of Radiohead’s “Creep”

Singer: Amanda Palmer

Song: “Creep”

So, yes, she is sitting in her underwear. And, yes, there is language. Come to terms with who she is, and, seriously, listen to that voice.

It is absolutely powerful. And the feels of the song seem different when a woman sings rather than a man.

Something special happens here. The interaction between Neil and Amanda is so sweet; it almost feels like the viewer is invading on an intimate moment. Such a fascinating, incredibly creative couple. I love how she sings, “I’m a creep. You’re a weirdo. But I don’t really care.” This is different from the original lyrics. It makes this interaction between viewer and listener, future couple and then husband and wife, more unique, don’t you think?

(Side note: the two married in 2011 and are expecting a baby in September!)

This is a cover, originally done by the band Radiohead. The video is from all the way back in 2008. And 4 in the morning, apparently. Dang, wish I sounded this good that early. Read below (description from Youtube):

Uploaded on Aug 18, 2008

lyrics:

When you were here before,
I couldn’t look you in the eye.
You’re just like an angel,
your skin makes me cry.
You float like a feather
in a beautiful world,
you’re so very special…
I wish I was special.

But I’m a creep, I’m a weirdo.
What the hell am I doing here?
I don’t belong here.

I don’t care if it hurts
I want to have control.
I want a perfect body,
I want a perfect soul.
I want you to notice
when I’m not around.
You’re so f* special
I wish I was special.

But I’m a creep, I’m a weirdo.
What the hell am I doing here?
I don’t belong here.

She’s running out the door.
She’s running!
She run, run, run, run, run.

Whatever makes you happy,
whatever you want.
You’re so f* special
I wish I was special.

But I’m a creep, I’m a weirdo.
What the hell am I doing here?
I don’t belong here.
I don’t belong here!

Tuesday Tunes: AJR’s “I’m Ready”

Band: AJR

Song: “I’m Ready”

The song behind Amy Schumer‘s Trainwreck (enters around 1.49). Nope, I haven’t seen the movie. But. This. Song. So I don’t really care about the lyrics. But when “oh-weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee” starts up, who wouldn’t want to bust a move?

lyrics:

I’m ready

You’re feeling good, you’re feeling right
Across the floor, and I’m already losing my mind
Baby girl, looking fine
Watch you playing and playing and playing these guys
Catch my stare, little smile
Tell me that you’re ready and you’re feeling the vibe
Someday I’ll be so damn sublime,
We’ll arrive behind a hash-tag sign

I won’t forget you, but I may…
Forget your name

My lady
I know what you’re thinking
When the bass starts ringing
Can you tell me when you’re stoked to start?
Are you ready for tonight,
Setting it on fire
And we’ll dance until we’re dumb in the dark

My lady
I know what you’re thinking
When the bass starts ringing
Can you tell me when you’re stoked to start?
Are you ready for tonight,
Setting it on fire
And we’ll dance until we’re dumb in the dark
Are you ready?
I’m ready

Break me down, dirty jokes
Watch me dear, and say what you wanna know
Beauty lies,within the eyes
Of the beholder, I’ll be holding you close all night

I won’t forget you, but I may…
Forget your name

My lady
I know what you’re thinking
When the bass starts ringing
Can you tell me when you’re stoked to start?
Are you ready for tonight,
Setting it on fire
And we’ll dance until we’re dumb in the dark

My lady
I know what you’re thinking
When the bass starts ringing
Can you tell me when you’re stoked to start?
Are you ready for tonight,
Setting it on fire
And we’ll dance until we’re dumb in the dark
Are you ready?
I’m ready

Break me down, I’m ready, break me down
Break me down, I’m ready, break me down
Break me down, I’m ready, break me down
Break me down, I’m ready, break me down
I won’t forget you, but I may…
Forget your name

I’m ready

Break me down, I’m ready, break me down
Break me down, I’m ready, break me down

Are you ready?

Tuesday Tunes: Jasmine Thompson’s Cover of “Demons”

Song: “Demons”

Original: Imagine Dragons

Cover by: Jasmine Thompson

lyrics:

When the days are cold
And the cards all fold
And the saints we see
Are all made of gold

When your dreams all fail
And the ones we hail
Are the worst of all
And the blood’s run stale

I wanna hide the truth
I wanna shelter you
But with the beast inside
There’s nowhere we can hide

No matter what we breed
We still are made of greed
This is my kingdom come
This is my kingdom come

When you feel my heat
Look into my eyes
It’s where my demons hide
It’s where my demons hide
Don’t get too close
It’s dark inside
It’s where my demons hide
It’s where my demons hide

At the curtain’s call
It’s the last of all
When the lights fade out
All the sinners crawl

So they dug your grave
And the masquerade
Will come calling out
At the mess you made

Don’t wanna let you down
But I am hell bound
Though this is all for you
Don’t wanna hide the truth

No matter what we breed
We still are made of greed
This is my kingdom come
This is my kingdom come

When you feel my heat
Look into my eyes
It’s where my demons hide
It’s where my demons hide
Don’t get too close
It’s dark inside
It’s where my demons hide
It’s where my demons hide

They say it’s what you make
I say it’s up to fate
It’s woven in my soul
I need to let you go

Your eyes, they shine so bright
I wanna save that light
I can’t escape this now
Unless you show me how

When you feel my heat
Look into my eyes
It’s where my demons hide
It’s where my demons hide
Don’t get too close
It’s dark inside
It’s where my demons hide
It’s where my demons hide

Tuesday Tunes: Buzzfeed’s “Can’t Crush Me”

Who: Buzzfeed

Song: “Can’t Crush Me”

Dear reader,

  • Buzzfeed people came up with this super cute song. (I’m not really sure who wrote it.) Feeling sad? Why not create your own Taylor Swift-inspired song!
  • Tswizzle fan here. Sorry—haters gunna hate.
  • The lyrics are silly, but my boyfriend and I recently broke up, so it’s fun to belt these lyrics—out loud or in my head, and I’m rocking out while walking around like a weirdo. Life, in general, has been difficult lately. It’s nice to be reminded that all these hard times aren’t going to crush me! Heck no, techno!
  • Also, Ashley Perez is my favorite from Buzzfeed. So funny.

<3, the bbb blogger

lyrics:

Drinking pumpkin spice lattes like a Taylor Swift song
When you pass by and I pretended not to to notice you
It’s been two weeks since we last talk
So I’ll dance instead of being sad about you

I’m not gonna let this break up crush me
I’m not gonna cry cause you won’t love me
I’m not gonna let this break up crush me
You don’t know me, You don’t own me
Crush, Crush, Crush, you can’t crush me
Crush, Crush, Crush, you can’t crush me

They say I don’t care enough
They say I don’t wear enough
Keep my heart cover up cause no one like a sad song
I’m not like other girls; I travel round the world
And shake it of like I’m nude at the park

I’m not gonna let these haters crush me
Give you ninety boxes of chipotle on your birthday
I’m not gonna let these haters crush me
They don’t know me, they don’t own me
Crush, Crush, Crush, they can’t crush me
Crush, Crush, Crush

Harry, John, and Jake can’t shake shake shake
Because they call up too late to catch another break
But if you want a sick beats just call up the sweets
Cause they drop them beats like some clumsy farmers

I wore my white dress Wednesday hoping you would look at me
You walk the other way and treat my heart to symphony
I can’t stop thinking about you, but I gotta live without you
You just a mystery and not resolving over me

I’m not gonna let this crush just crush me
I’m just gonna run cause you don’t love me
I’m not gonna let this crush just crush me
You don’t know me, you don’t own me

I’m not gonna let this crush just crush me
I’m just gonna run cause you don’t love me
I’m not gonna let this crush just crush me
You don’t know me, you don’t own me

I’m not gonna let this crush just crush me
I’m just gonna run cause you don’t love me
I’m not gonna let this crush just crush me
You don’t know me, you don’t own me

Tuesday Tunes: Mikky Ekko’s “Smile”

Singer: Mikky Ekko

Song: “Smile”

from Time

lyrics:

Smile, the worst is yet to come

We’ll be lucky if we ever see the sun
Got nowhere to go, we could be here for a while
But the future is forgiven so smile
We’re trying so hard to get it all right
But only if you’re lonely at the end of the night
And I wanna be somewhere away from this place
And somewhere just a little closer to grace

So smile, the worst is yet to come
We’ll be lucky if we ever see the sun
Got nowhere to go, we could be here for a while
But the future is forgiven so smile
Smile

Well, call me loser
Call me thief
Tell me I’m special when you spit at me
Cause I don’t wanna be lonely
I wanna be loved
And I want you hold me like I’m the only one

I’ll smile
The worst is yet to come
We’ll be lucky if we ever see the sun
Got nowhere to go, we could be here for a while
But the future is forgiven so smile
Smile

Time will eventually knock on my door
And tell me I’m not needed around anymore
But he’ll hold me so close at the end of the day
When I’m quiet I can nearly hear him say

Smile
The worst is yet to come
We’ll be lucky if we ever see the sun
Got nowhere to turn, and we’ve got nothing but time
But the future is forever, the future is forever so smile

Smile
The worst is yet to come
We’ll be lucky if we ever see the sun
